Huddle

14.9 - 18.9

Meeting the other dancers in the gallery of Neues Nationale Gallery, I feel a kinship as our bodies come together. An intimacy which together softens the edges of our individual selves and calls upon the collective to do what it needs to do in order to support our independent journeys. Like the earth listening to the footfalls of human passersby: from inside the huddle the weight of the others feels like clouds passing overheard. Sometimes thunder, sometimes a light shower; the landscape of our enmeshed mass disseminates the pressure and bends to the path. A hyper -sensitised surface that can yield or resist depending on what is required. Determined in form, the huddle resists the habit of collapsing and stands for humanity through the act of supporting. A testament to the humanist manifesto and the commitment to honour individuality and collective human endeavour.

What would the huddle look like now if Simone had made it in 2022? Has the intersection of humanism and Fluxus been eclipsed by more pressing configurations in the struggle for equity- both human and non-human? To answer this question I think we need to  unpack more of Forti's works at Neues Nationales Gallery. To understand the continued relevance of her works we can first Huddle, but we also need to SlantSee-sawRoll and Scramble
