Take Heart Residency Hellerau 2023
What I have discovered since embarking on this research is that it is in the subtleties of methodology that there is relevance. It is not solely about the form, the form is a consequence of a deep, active listening. I identified my sources of information which were not human to be bone, mineral and earth. In relation to my original (human) influences: Laborgras, Rebecca Hilton, David Hernandez and Keith A.Thompson I can include Laurel Atwell and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. It is within this combined knowledge of body mind centering, qi-gong and what has been identified so far as 'movement logic,' which I think contemporary movement practices can further not only an aesthetic and cultural discourse but an ecological one. I have documented this research thorough video, text and am looking for avenues to share the information through studio time, e.g. teaching.
I was surprised by how much my interspecies practice now, years on, correlates to my studio practice. My inter-species practice takes place primarily outside of the studio, at home or outdoors and involves breathwork and acknowledgement of non-human elements in the environment. What came up as a surprise to me was that in documenting and delving into both my contemporary dance practice and interspecies practice simultaneously, that early memories of movement investigations came up. Such as rock formations: an experiment from twenty years ago where my friend and I explored the relation between the arrangement of our skeletons, our bodies and the basalt rocks of the northern coast of Scotland. This simple but profound memory came up as a connector and indicator of the development of my work which including research into air and breath, has fuelled my interspecies work with plants. This time the curious relation of a meteorite hurtling though the airspace intersected my terrestrial and astral perception and symbolised a destructive and reconfigurative force which correlated to dramatic changes in my personal life. This intersplicing of aesthetic and physical practice with personal and emotional dimension as well as an elemental non-human presence was an unforseen outcome of the research.
